1.3 Calendars and Datebooks, 1936 - 1998

 Sub-Series

Contents:

This subseries contains calendars, datebooks, and engagement books used by Bethune from 1936-1998. (Only those which include handwritten notes by Bethune are included in the files. Additional calendars without notes have been removed for space constraints and may still be available to researchers for graphic arts reference.) Years missing calendars include: 1948, 1968-69, 1976-77, and 1999-2002. Some years include double or triple calendars (all used by Bethune). Most datebooks include not only appointments, but also diary-style notes and observations, task lists, names with contact information, projects worked on or due dates, church Saint days or festivals, Bethune's location for that day, etc.; almost all entries are textual in nature. Any inserted ephemeral items (Bethune's notes or other printed materials) have been left in place. The format of Bethune's datebooks vary: from 1936-1951 Bethune created her own datebooks from small notebooks (with the exception of The Catholic Year 1946 and a 1947 Swiss German students' book and calendar); from 1952-1967 Bethune used small pocket diaries (with additional notes written on Church Feasts calendars for some of the years); and from 1970-1998 Bethune used pre-printed pictorial wall calendars, desk blotters, or spiral bound engagement books.
