About the School of Social Work
The Sociology Department of St. Catherine University offered courses in Sociology with an emphasis in Social Work beginning in the 1930s. In the fall of 1969, the Social Work major was established within the department of Sociology following accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education, combining courses and other materials and support with the University of St. Thomas beginning in the spring of 1974. The School of Social Work would become its own department, combined with St. Thomas in 1976. The graduate program was started in 1990, entitled Master of Social Work, which also began as joint program with St. Thomas, and has remained so.
