About the Master's in Library and Information Science Program

The Library and Information Science Program originated as an undergraduate program with a short stint at a graduate program in the 1950’s. In 1984 the undergraduate Library Science program was renamed to focus on Information Management and in 1992 the Master of Library and Information Science Program branched off to serve graduate students, the undergraduate degree in Information Management being discontinued in 2009. The program was fully accredited by the American Library Association in 2011; the process was started in 2008 when the program was granted provisional accreditation. Before full accreditation the program was a joint program through Dominican University in Illinois; students would enroll at St. Kate’s but would receive a degree from Dominican University after either spending a semester at Dominican or receiving instruction from Dominican professors through web cameras and other technology. Today the program once again offers courses for undergraduate students creating minors in Computer Science and Digital Humanities; the first course was offered in fall of 2016.
