About the Nutrition and Exercise Science Program
The major of Exercise Science and Nutrition originally began as two separate departments and majors. The two original departments for both aspects were the Departments of Domestic Science, the Department of Physiology and Hygiene and the Department of Physical Culture. The Department of Domestic Science evolved to the Department of Home Economics and Domestic Art before being named the Department of Home Economics in 1922. This department ended in 1992 and became the Department of Family, Consumer and Nutritional Sciences. The departments prior to the Department of Exercise and Sport Science were very diverse. There were originally two departments that began in 1906 related to this field but after 1913 no department related to exercise and sports science remained. The classes that were related to the Department of Physiology and Hygiene and the Department of Physical Culture became required classes until 1916 when the Department of Hygiene and Physical Education was created. This later evolved into the Department of Physical Education in 1926 until1999 when it became the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. The combination of the Physical Education and Family, Consumer and Nutritional Sciences began in 1986 and became known as the exercise science and nutrition major. In 2016 the Exercise Science and Nutrition major was added, a change from the previous combined major where students would take courses from both the dietetics program and the exercise and sports science program. The Physical Education Department also housed sports and athletics until 1994. In 1994 the Butler Center was built and an athletic department was created.
