About the Department of Sociology
Sociology classes have been offered as early as 1906 with a course titled “Christian Sociology” however it is not clear if this course was more concerned with ethics of sociology. In 1921 the Department of Economics and Sociology was formed, in this department only one sociology course was offered. In 1922 the department was moved to the Department of Social and Political Sciences and offered more courses creating the sociology major with an emphasis on social work. A new department was formed in 1933, the Department of Sociology and Social Service, this department primarily focused on social work. In 1969 these two departments were separated with the creation of the Social Work department. This move allowed for the Sociology courses to have an emphasis on sociology and not social work.
