About the Department of Music and Theater

This department originally started as two separate departments: Music and Expression. The Department of Music would remain independent until 2011 when it was combined with Theater. Expression was mainly about public speaking and communication, with dramatics in a few of the courses. In 1922 dramatics and public speaking were combined with the English department until 1941, when they split from the English department and became the Department of Speech and Drama. From 1978 to 1984 this department was renamed the Department of Communications and Theater. In 1990 this department's successor, the Department of Communications, Telecommunications, and Theater split, with Communications and Telecommunications as one department and Theater as its own department. It was not until 2011 that theater and music were combined as the Department of Music and Theater.
