About the Department of Math and Physics
The Department of Mathematics and Physics was originally two separate departments. Physics was then combined with Chemistry from the 1920s to 1940s, after which it became its own department again. In the 1960s and 1970s the teaching of physics was largely transferred to the College St. Thomas, and though some classes remained at the College of St. Catherine it did not have a full department. With the invention of computers the Department of Mathematical Sciences began offering classes in computer functions and programming, which its successor continues. In 2013 Mathematics and Physics were formally united into the Department of Mathematics and Physics.
