About the Humanities Program
St. Catherine's Division of Humanities began in 1936, although a major in humanites was not offered until 1944. In 1952 Humanities was an interdepartmental major, and in 1957 the number of Humanities courses rose from two to five, though they were still listed as interdepartmental. Between 1972 and 1974 the Humanities major went from being interdepartmental to having a designated faculty member, though in the 1976 catalogue the program is once again listed as interdepartmental with no specific faculty. In 1982 Humanities was listed in the course catalogue with a coordinator instead of department faculty, and by 1984 the major and its classes were discontinued.
