English Department Records
Scope and Contents
The collection houses various records of the history of the department. The collection mainly consists of department meeting minutes, administrative files, course outlines and descriptions, and student classwork. The collection has one file of photographs in the Events & Publicity series. Other items of note within the collection are bound copies of student work from classes taught by Robert Grunst, and copies of winning entires from the Emerging Writers Contest.

Biographical / Historical
The Department of English was first recognized as a department when the college first opened in 1905. The department was the starting place of the Writing Across the Curriculum program. In 1977 the department opened a writing center to assist students with their writing skills. The writing center was combined with the reaing and math learning centers to form one cohesive Learning Center. On April 25, 1985 the Learning Center was rededicated to Sr. Sarah O'Neill, CSJ, following her death in February. The center then became The O'Neill Center for Academic Development. The department sponsored events including the English Majors’ Conference and the Emerging Writers Contest. The department published two newsletters entitled Penultimate and Cool Communique.

Abstract
The Department of English records contain materials documenting the activities of the department. These materials are meeting minutes, student work, department events and publicity, and curriculum outlines and descriptions. There is also information on the Learning Center, which was the beginnings of the O'Neill Center, and materials on Writing Across the Curriculum.
