The Mother Antonia McHugh Complex started construction in 1968 and was completed in 1970. Curtis Green of Hammel, Green and Abrahamson was the architect for the project, alongside contractor Gunnar Johnson and Son, Inc. The complex is made up of the music building, speech building, the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium, and the Frey Theater. The entire complex cost was about $5 million, including the unattached Art Building. Funding came from the first ever Capital Campaign held by St. Catherine’s, which brought in about $4,070,000 from gifts and pledges, as well as a $1 million challenge grant from the Ford Foundation.
