About Aimee and Patrick Butler Center

Name: Aimee and Patrick Butler Center Year Opened: Dedicated May 1, 1994 Years of Construction: 1993-1994 (ground-breaking April 13, 1993) Architect: Tolz, King, Duvall, Anderson & Assoc. Contractor: McGough Construction Co., Inc.

Construction for the student fitness center began in April 1993, after an environmental issue caused the project to be delayed, by architect Tolz, King, Duvall, Anderson & Assoc. and contractor McGough Construction Co., Inc. Jim Scheibel, then the mayor of St. Paul, declared the day of groundbreaking (April 13, 1993) to be "Women's Fitness Day." The building was completed in 1994 and dedicated on May 1st of that year. The 65,000 square-foot building included a 13,000 square-foot gymnasium and a 25-yard, eight-lane pool. Construction costs amounted to approximately $7.35 million. The building was named for the donor, Aimee Butler, who donated $1.5 million in support of the project, and her late husband Patrick Butler. The building also houses a sauna, a spa, and the campus Health and Wellness Center. It is connected to Fontbonne Hall by a skyway.
