Biographical / Historical
From McGuire's obituary: "Margaret Mary McGuire was born to Charles and Myrtle McGowan McGuire in Morton, MN [on September 8, 1911]... Margaret's great grandparents, Robert Bennet Henton and Margaret Thomas Henton came to southern MN in 1856 and lived in close friendship and cultural exchange with their native Dakota neighbors. This inspired [Margaret's] lifelong interest in and gratitude to Native American people. In 1976, she established a scholarship for Native American women at her alma mater. A 1933 graduate of the College of St. Catherine, she was a librarian at the [Minneapolis] Public Library for 34 years. After surviving the German submarine torpedoing of the passenger ship Athenia in 1939, she served for 28 years in active duty with the US. Navy, achieving the rank of Lt. Commander... Active in organizing with the Mpls and Hennepin County Central Labor Union and AFL-CIO, she also served at the Basilica and was secretary for the Archdiocesan Labor School. She received the Mayor of Mpls Outstanding Citizen Award [in] 1950 and 1951..." (St. Paul Pioneer Press, November 4, 2011).
