Biographical / Historical
Sophia Brough Kampfer, whose maternal ancestry was Native American, was a 1933 graduate of the College of St. Catherine. In 1979, following a donation by Sophia, the Sophia Brough Kampfer Scholarship fund was established to help students from her home state of Montana to attend the College. Through the years, Sophia lived in Oregon, California, and, for one year, Germany. Active in politics, Sophia successfully advocated for the passage in 1978 of Proposition 13, an amendment to the California state constitution that restricts the rate of increase on property tax assessments.
