The Department of English was first recognized as a department when the college first opened in 1905. The department was the starting place of the Writing Across the Curriculum program. In 1977 the department opened a writing center to assist students with their writing skills. The writing center was combined with the reaing and math learning centers to form one cohesive Learning Center. On April 25, 1985 the Learning Center was rededicated to Sr. Sarah O'Neill, CSJ, following her death in February. The center then became The O'Neill Center for Academic Development. The department sponsored events including the English Majors’ Conference and the Emerging Writers Contest. The department published two newsletters entitled Penultimate and Cool Communique.
